Small Business Marketing
July 7, 2009
Marketing is a mystery to those who create it as well as for their clients, so what chance does anyone have of getting it right. A campaign that generates record breaking results in one month can be repeated the following month and bomb. An ad campaign designed by the best advertising company can a mediocre response, while a one page flyer designed at home on your computer can elicit a huge response and be highly successful. So what then, constitutes great Marketing??
Whether you’re a large conglomerate or a small business, the marketing concepts are still the same.
In order for you to develop a successful Small Business Marketing campaign you must be able to answer a few questions about your product or service:
- What kind of business are you in?
- What is the nature of your business service or product?
- What segments of the market are you selling to, age, sex, income level etc.
- What strategies will you use to attract and keep your customers?
- What is your Unique Selling Position (USP)?
- Who is your competition?
This market research is a must to help you understand your business and your customer’s interests. It is a process of learning what your customers want or need and determining how you satisfy those wants or needs.
The problem facing the Small Business owner is that conducting market research can be an expensive exercise, it takes time and requires professional expertise. Small Business Advertising and marketing can cost you an arm and a leg. If you have a limited budget try some of the following techniques:
- Set up an Advisory Board of local people who you trust
- Set up a User Group
- Send informal surveys or sample surveys
- Set up a suggestions box
- Set up a brainstorming group within your customer base.
The more you know about your customers, the better you will be able to satisfy and even anticipate their needs.
